3 Tips to keep your team on track and informed

Internal communications (that is, the way you communicate information to your team) can make or break a business! It’s always been tough but with COVID, it’s more challenging than ever as many teams are scattered due to remote working requirements.

One of the things COVID has taught us is the importance of a speedy response during a crisis. So too is a clear and consistent message to ensure the desired results are achieved. On the other hand, inconsistent messaging can lead to misunderstandings and misinformation.

How do you ensure your message stays consistent and timely?

Here are 3 tips to help you keep your internal communications in tip-top shape:

1.Start by making sure you and your management team (if you have one) are on the same page as each other so everyone is consistently communicating the same message. In other words, keep a single source of truth.

2.Ensure you, your managers and team leaders set the right example. Inconsistent behaviour can come across as favouritism (even if it’s unintentional). This can seem unfair or lead to gossip and rumours, which in turn can do serious damage to staff performance and morale.

3.Make sure all employees have access to the latest information and updates in a timely manner. It may sound obvious but remember, they all need to receive the same message, at the same time.

For your employees to feel supported, informed and part of a team (especially if they’re working remotely), you need to have the right communications systems and platforms to facilitate good internal communications.

Investigate the viability of an internal messaging system, closed Facebook group or similar platform as it can be used as an easy-to-use resource for facilitating employee engagement and communication.

In larger organisations or those with new staff members, consider creating an internal directory where employees can share their skill sets to help team members find the right person for collaboration and support.

Remember, to facilitate good communications and keep employees engaged, internal communications need to be more than just serious information relating to work or a crisis. Sharing daily wins (big or small) can help boost team morale while facilitating the giving and receiving of feedback, can help employees feel heard and supported.

Where you can, add a sense of fun through your internal communications as well. Online games, quizzes and trivia can, for example, help break up the stress of tedious meetings and hard work.
